| Prizes announced: Vouchers by Snow+Rock & Cyclesurgery & wetsuits from Orca make the prize pot worth over £3000. Prize winners of the FGS! Xtreme Terrain Festival will now be going home with more than just muddy shoes. Top prize of £100 voucher and a wetsuit will help focus the mind for those athletes battling it out on 27th September 2008. |
Swim: The lake will be shimmering on the morning of 27th September, only disturbed by a fleet of safety canoes and motor boat. A mass start on the beach sets off the athletes for a 750m triangle lap around a buoy and island. Full distance athletes will require an exit and re-entry across the sandy beach to make a 2 lap 1500m swim.
T1: A secure transition area 10 meters from the water means a quick transition. A short 20m run with bike to the mounting area outside the army compound will start you on the 4 lap MTB course.
Bike: 750m of gentle track and tarmac allows you to find your cycling legs before we start with a 200m gentle climb leveling off to a technical down hill into a sand bowl. Between 1k and 1.5k the wide gravel tracks offer good overtaking opportunities before you start the single track muscle burning ride. The tight single track through woodland throws up obstacles including roots, over hanging bushes and sharp turns. This brings you out at the edge of the next pine woodland again creating a single track route. There's no room for mistakes here where the tracks twists and turns out into the open. At 2.5k you hit the ‘scramble’ which can only be accomplished by dismounting. After a 10m climb on foot we hit more woodland tracks with a fast and narrow exit. Following the telegraph wires up hill you re-enter the woodlands again for the ultimate 1.5k downhill single track. Some wider stretches allow for overtaking otherwise wait until you arrive at the base of a loose gravel climb. This climb is rewarded with a 100m tarmac slope to the lap point. 4 laps make the 24k MTB route. Bike lap: Here will be a bike mechanic offering parts and tools, but no help.
Run: This is a 5k woodland trail which covers some sandy areas. A water station is at 2k, 3k, 7k and 8k. Although not very hilly the multi terrain route does take in a few short climbs and descents. The trees offer some relief from the scorching sun, until you return to the finish line back by the waters edge.
Logistics on the day: The event is centered around the lake with bike racking next to the swim start and the finish line. Car parking is free and literally only 300m away. Electronic race chips will provide immediate results with prize giving shortly after the winners finish. |
